Slow cooked braised steak & onions with dumplings
Braised steak & onion:
1kg chuck steak
2 cups reduced salt beef stock
1tbs powder beef stock
2tbs gravox onion gravy powder
1tbs Italian herbs
3 onions chopped into quarters
1 clove garlic crushed
4tbs tomato sauce
4tbs bbq sauce
Salt & pepper
1 cups self raising flour
Cut chuck steak into cubes and dust lightly with seasoned plain flour and brown in fry pan with a little oil.
In another pan melt butter and add chopped onions and garlic and cook till transparent.
In the slow cooker add the liquid beef stock, powder stock, Italian herbs and sauces plus 1 tbs of plain flour.
Add meat, onions & garlic and cook on high for 5 hours. Towards the end add 1tbs brown onion gravox powder to desired consistency of gravy depending on how thick you like it.
With 45minutes to go start making your dumplings.
In a bowl put self raising flour and rub through 1tbs butter. Add milk and beaten egg.
Mix together with fork and then pound into dough with your hands and fist for a couple minutes. Make little balls with dough rolling in your hand about a 2cm circumference. Once dough is all rolled into balls submerge into slow cooker under the gravy and keep cooking for about 30 to 40 minutes.
This was my nanas recipe that the whole family loved, hope you enjoy.
Picture doesn’t look the best but my god it’s delicious and for the left overs if any, put on toast for breakfast the next morning like we do.
