Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 2.2 pounds Oyster Blade steak → (or any cheap casserole steak, diced beef, or brisket)
- 3 tablespoons creamy mild American mustard → (from a bottle)
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons plain flour
- 1 pinch salt and pepper
- 0.5 cups tomato sauce or ketchup → (low sugar or regular both work)
- 0.1 cups soy sauce → (low salt or regular both work)
- 1 piece large brown onion → cut into thin slices
Nanny’s Braised Steak: Making Steps
- Coat steak with mustard mix: Put 3 tablespoons creamy mild American mustard (from a bottle) and 3 tablespoons brown sugar into a big plastic freezer bag. Drop in your 2.2 pounds Oyster Blade steak (or any cheap casserole steak, diced beef, or brisket) and close the bag. Shake and squish it around so every piece of steak gets covered in the mustard and sugar mix.
- Dust with flour: Grab a second freezer bag and pour in 2 tablespoons plain flour. Mix a small pinch of salt and pepper into the flour. Now tip the steak from the first bag into this flour bag. Shake it around so the steak gets a light dusty coating of flour all over.
- Layer in slow cooker: Take the steak pieces out of the flour bag and lay them in your slow cooker, one next to the other if you can. Then spread the 1 large brown onion, cut into thin slices on top of the steak.
- Mix and pour the sauces: Stir together the 0.5 cups tomato sauce or ketchup (low sugar or regular both work) and 0.1 cups soy sauce (low salt or regular both work) in a small bowl or cup, then pour the whole mixture over the steak and onions. You do NOT need to add any water — the steak makes its own yummy gravy as it cooks!
- Slow cook on LOW: Put the lid on and cook on LOW for 300 minutes

. Walk away and let the slow cooker do all the hard work! - Serve and enjoy: Spoon the super-soft steak onto plates with mashed potatoes and veggies. Pour the thick gravy from the pot all over the top. Dig in!
Notes
Beef options: This recipe works great with diced beef or brisket too. Brisket can be sliced or pulled apart with a fork once it’s done cooking.
No water needed! Don’t worry — you really don’t add water. The steak and sauces make plenty of gravy on their own. Some people add half a cup of water if they like, but it truly doesn’t need it.
Serve with: Creamy mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, and loads of that gorgeous gravy poured right over the top.
A little story: This recipe came from Nanny’s own kitchen — a dish her kids grew up loving and never forgot. Now it’s here for your family to love too. ❤️
